When something is going on at home, it can be difficult to focus on work. Whether it is a death in the family, a divorce, a new baby, problems with your children at school, or financial difficulties, it can be so consuming that your company almost falls off your radar. Here are some tips that will help you deal with your personal challenges without letting them take a toll on your business:

Try to leave them at home. As human beings, it is impossible for us to totally compartmentalize our lives. Our problems at home always impact our work, at least to some degree. However, you can minimize the effect this has. Make a commitment to be totally focused on work while you are there. Also, try to keep personal appointments and phone calls to a minimum during working hours.

Take some time off. Instead of showing up to work and half-heartedly going through the motions, consider taking a week or two off to address the situation. It’ll be easier to do what you need to do when you can completely focus on the problem, and let’s be honest; you weren’t getting much work done anyway.Let your colleagues know what is going on. Depending on your comfort level, you might find it helpful to disclose your situation to your close colleagues. This will make them understand why you are distracted and assure them that your commitment to your business is not waning. Also, once they know what is happening, they may be able to offer support that will make the situation less stressful for you.

Take a holistic approach. The way that you take care of yourself has a huge effect on your level of resilience. What is your diet like? How often do you exercise? How much sleep do you get? What do you do to relax? How often do you connect with your friends? If you are not taking care of your mind and body, it will be even more difficult for you to cope with life’s challenges.

No matter what stage you are at in your life, you will always face difficult times. Do your best to keep it all in perspective. While this situation feels overwhelming in the moment, most of the problems that we encounter don’t last for very long. This too will pass.

Something that wasn't taught when I took my business coach training... how to deal with a support a client who is experiencing serious personal challenges.

My client is the business owner...

My first... a client lost a son - the son was killed in a car accident. The same client (suddenly) lost their brother two years later.

A client once showed me a spouse's cell phone - the spouse had saved text messages showing a six month affair.

5 clients going through diverse, one included a very frustrating custody battle.

Another client had a staff member threatening suicide.

Just a highlight of "personal challenges" that some of my clients are dealing with.
