Making money online! Everyone wants the secret sauce to online success. Who wouldn't want to earn a living working from the comforts of their own home?
So are you ready to monetize? The most important thing to know is: eyeballs convert to dollars. So this means building your web traffic is crucial to your online success.
Let’s get started, shall we? I will share with you a few different ways to make money online. I am doing most of them. The great thing about these strategies is they allow you to diversify your income stream, which is always nice.
Tips and strategies for online monetization:
Start Building Your List Immediately
Make sure to have that opt in, join, subscribe, or call to action button visible on your homepage. This way, when you finally have a monetizable offer to sell to people (ex: product, service, coaching program, e-course, tele-seminar), you will have receptive buyers. These days, it’s all about how big your lists are, so get cracking. I regret not having had a more aggressive call to action sooner. Build that list from day one!
Again, this is where those eyeballs come in handy. This is where high traffic to your website is important. So, it might be worth investing in an affordable SEO plan so your website comes up in the first few pages when people search your key words. Track your numbers with Google Analytics so you know your traffic – page views, unique visitors per month, bounce rates, et cetera. Then once you’ve got some good traffic, you can put together a nice little media kit for sponsorship opportunities! Now you can start hitting the PR firms or brands you want to work with directly. Now is when your sales skills get put to good use.
Paid Brand Ambassadorship and Spokesperson Jobs
This is where a brand will hire you to represent their brand online and “in real life” or IRL, leveraging your audience. This is when building that community becomes important – brands will pay money to target their products to your community. You create a mix of blog posts, sponsored video YouTube series, Twitter parties and tweets, Facebook postings, Instagram photos, television and radio appearances, magazine interviews, sponsored events, et cetera. I have been doing this since my blog’s inception, and it works beautifully.
Another way you can monetize your site is through selling ad space. You can sell your own ads yourself which lets you keep all the revenue (you can even start with local companies in your city), you can use Google Adsense (or other), or you can use a media company like I do, such as Glam Media or Federated Media, who supply banner advertisements to my site, but I give them a percentage of my revenue.
Become an Expert in Your Field! How About Adding “Coach” To Your Name?
I have been coaching and mentoring women in startups since 2000. A couple of years ago, I decided to invest in myself and actually get certified. So, besides speaking, I coach women via Skype and telephone right from my home office! What are your talents, and can you offer your talents to customers online? People who visit Erica-Diamond.com or WomenOnTheFence.com can see my coaching tab, then they hire me, and pay me right there via PayPal. Another beautiful revenue stream!
Webinars, Self-Published E-Books (Kindle Publishing), Tele-Seminars
Got something to teach? Create your own webinars, e-books, tele-seminars and sell them on your site, or opt to sell others’ (called affiliate links). If you don’t yet have your own programs, webinars, tele-seminars, or conferences to sell to your audience/list, you can sell other people’s programs or products (affiliates), and earn a handsome commission. There are plenty of experts looking to pay big commission to people who sell their products and services. So, if you’re not ready to create your own courses yet, selling other people’s products that you believe in, of course, is a nice revenue option.
Monetized Content and Reviews
This is where you write paid reviews or sponsored posts, either on your site, or for other sites or publications. Once you build a voice in your field, you may be asked to contribute paid articles for other sites or review them on your own.
As you gain momentum, you might even be asked to speak, and get paid for it too! The benefit of speaking for free at the beginning of growing your website is twofold: firstly, you get to promote it. Secondly, you get invaluable speaking experience and you can start to position yourself as an expert in your field (fashion, cooking, health, beauty, et cetera. So while many are not fans of speaking for free, I think while you are building your online site, and to practice for upcoming paid speaking gigs, I say absolutely yes.
There are umpteen different ways to monetize. Whatever your intentions are, may I say, be passionate about what you are about to embark upon. It takes a TON of work to grow your brand online, so if you can’t see yourself working many, many hours on it, I wouldn’t advise you to start.
