Being a mompreneur is a juggling act. On top of taking care of your children, you are also the captain and face of your business. While these responsibilities leave little time to spare, you still need to make me-time a priority. Here’s why:
It keeps you focused on the bigger picture. When you are constantly rushing from one task to the next, it is easy to lose focus. You are so busy checking items off your to-do list that you forget what really matters, both in your business and in your life.
It makes you happier and healthier. All work and no play is not good for anyone. It causes headaches, ulcers, wrinkles, and a perpetual bad mood. Taking time to do something that you enjoy is a positive choice for your health, your sanity, and your relationships with your loved ones.
Your children are the centre of your world and your business is your life’s work, but you are the glue that ties everything together.
It allows you to think more clearly. When you are tired, it is difficult to solve complex problems and your creativity is limited. Scheduling time for a break may be the most productive thing that you can do as you will return to work refreshed and ready to get things done.
Okay, so taking time for yourself is important, but with everything you’ve got on your plate, how will you ever be able to make it happen? Give these strategies a try:
Find a trade-off. Who says that the bartering system is dead? Why not set one up with a friend? One week she can take your kids on a Saturday afternoon and the next week you take hers. These little trade-offs can buy you time to do something you enjoy.
Plan an activity. A great way to get someone to happily take your kids for a few hours is to plan a special day. Set them up for a picnic, beach day, or trip to the zoo. This is an excellent way to allow your family members to build a special bond with your children while you sneak off to get a manicure. Who knows, you may even decide to tag along.
Plan yourself a “me” day. At least every two months, schedule a day for yourself. Put it on your calendar and plan everything else around it. Take the time to read a book, visit a different city, or have lunch with an old friend. Initially, you may have to be firm with yourself about honouring this day, but if you stick with it, you will thank yourself later.
What do you want out of your life? What do you want to see, do and accomplish while you have the time? Your children are the centre of your world and your business is your life’s work, but you are the glue that ties everything together. Don’t allow yourself to disappear during the midst of all this busyness. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to accomplish your own dreams.
