Social Media Etiquette: Top 5 Tips

Most businesses have a presence on social media. Some use it strategically and some don’t. There are unwritten rules for social networking and if you don’t follow them, you risk alienating your customers. Here are 5 tips that will help your business make a good impression on social media sites.                                          

Support others. The value of social networking is dependent on the spirit of reciprocity. If everyone exclusively focuses on their own goals, nobody will benefit from it. When you make a genuine effort to help the people in your network, they will want to be connected with you and they will be eager to give you their support whenever you need it. 

Provide value. The worst thing that you can do in social media is sound like a commercial. People are only interested in following your business if there is something in it for them. Use your sites to educate your customers about your industry, provide links to relevant articles and information, and offer contests and special promotions. When people feel that they benefit from visiting your site, they are more likely to return to it. 

Be responsive. If you don’t maintain your social media sites, then it is best to delete them. When you create a social media site for your business, you are effectively telling your customers that it is another way that they can contact you. If your customers try to reach you through these sites and you don’t respond, they will get a bad impression of your company. Check your inboxes at least twice daily and promptly respond to any messages that you receive. 

Update consistently. For most entrepreneurs, social media is something that they try to pack into their already busy day. As a result, they may post ten times in one day and then not post anything for a week. This is not an effective use of these sites. If your customers visit your site and there are no updates, they will quickly give up on you. Make it a priority to take thirty minutes out of your day to maintain your sites. If you can’t find the time, then you can either schedule your posts or hire someone to post for you. 

Don’t overdo it. While it’s a good idea to keep your content fresh, you don’t want to flood your customers with status updates. If you have more than five postings a day, you may find that people start to unfollow you. If you want to invest more time into social networking, join groups, participate in discussions, and post on other people’s sites. There are many ways to engage with people without overwhelming your followers.

All the rules and guidelines around social media may start to feel a little discouraging. However, if you always consider your customer’s point of view before posting, you shouldn’t run into any problems.
