This blog was supposed to be finished yesterday. Never mind that it’s not actually due for three days. Never mind that there was something else that I needed to complete first. I set yesterday as the deadline, so no matter how amazing it turns out to be, in my mind it’s late. How many of you do this? We hold ourselves up to impossible standards and when we inevitably have trouble measuring up to them, we beat ourselves up. Being a perfectionist is not constructive and it’s not healthy. Here are some tips that will help you achieve your goals without making yourself crazy:
At what point does your pursuit of perfection become obsessive?
Know when to draw the line. At what point does your pursuit of perfection become obsessive? You need to be able to identify when it is getting in the way of your productivity instead of contributing to it. For example, imagine that you are proofreading a document. Reviewing it two or three times is reasonable, but after that it is unnecessary. Sure, you may still find a wayward comma, but was it really worth the two hours of work that it cost you?
Be positive. Try to shift your focus away from what you didn’t do and concentrate more on what you have managed to accomplish. This approach will build up your strength instead of pulling from it. Give yourself the same level of support that you provide your spouse and children.
Accept that you are not infallible. There’s no doubt about it: You’re awesome. However, you’re not a superhero and you shouldn’t burden yourself with unrealistic expectations. You may not be able to get everything perfect all of the time, but the fact that you’ve managed to be an entrepreneur amongst everything else in your life proves that you are amazing.
Surround yourself with people who support you. It’s nice to have cheerleaders and confidants, but when you’re under a lot of stress, it is a necessity. An outside perspective can help you maintain realistic expectations and prevent you from putting too much pressure on yourself.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There is no shame in asking for help. The ability to accept support is an indication of strength, not weakness. Allow your family and friends to be part of your success.
Nobody can attain perfection and you shouldn’t even try. Do your best, but also focus on living a balanced life and doing things that make you happy. You may not be perfect, but you are an inspiration to everyone everywhere.
