Juggling a family and a business is a challenge. Establishing routines can help, but sometimes everything starts to feel like a chore and one day blurs into the next. You made the decision to start a business while raising a family because you wanted to have it all. But sometimes it feels like all you have is a messy house and deadlines that you’ll never be able to meet. You give so much all day that you just collapse into your bed at night until it’s time to get up and do it all again. But isn’t there more to life than that? You used to have so many dreams and plans, but now you are so overwhelmed by your responsibilities that it’s a challenge just getting through the day. Here are some tips that will help you recapture your spark and live the life you always wanted:
Care for yourself. We all know that we’re supposed to take the time to focus on our own needs, but how many of us actually do it? It may not feel like a pressing item on your long list of priorities, but if you are suddenly unable to function because you haven’t been taking care of yourself, it would be bad for both your family and your business. Don’t just talk about it. Schedule a massage, a walk, breakfast with friends or time to read a book. Treat this time as sacredly as you would treat a meeting with your most important client.
Shake it up. A change gives you the opportunity to see everything from a different perspective. The change could either be with your business or your family. The point is that you are bringing your reality closer to your goals. Once you make one positive change in your life, you may feel inspired to make another.
Recognize that you are the pilot. Don’t fall into the trap of just moving through each day allowing life to “happen” to you. Make a conscious decision about what you want to achieve and then go do it. What is your life’s mission? What are your goals for both your business and your family? This – right now – is your life and the clock is ticking. Decide on what you want to accomplish and make it happen.
Meet new people. New people bring new possibilities. When you get out there and make connections, you never know what you might learn and who you might meet. Sometimes the most exciting opportunity can come out of the most mundane event, but you need to be there to make it happen.
Most people are afraid to start their own business (and understandably so), but you did it while raising children. Just being who you are is an amazing accomplishment. Try to keep everything in perspective. Eventually the dishes will get done and the closets will get organized, but right now you’re too busy being awesome!
