Dr Joey Shulman admits to having a single-track mind. Fortunately, it's focused on making it easier to choose healthy food.

Dr Joey's Wellness Tips for the Workplace

Energy: Research shows implementing wellness plans into the workplace, which include nutrition and exercise, can help to reduce stress and improve the energy levels and attitude of your entire team.

ROI: Smart companies invest in their employees. In fact, an average return on investment (ROI) for an employee wellness program is $3.40 for every $1.00 spent.

Prevention: It is estimated that over 70 percent of all healthcare spending is caused by preventable health risks. In other words, focusing on prevention is the key to increasing productivity and saving money.

There is something inherently decent and genuine about Dr Joey Shulman. She's funny and open. She knows what's she talking about and has the education to back her up. She also knows that "Skinnychews", a new product she's developed, are not the answer to weight loss. They are, in her words "tasty treats that keep you on track". These low calorie (less than 20 calories each), chocolate snacks are designed to get women over that mid-day meltdown where most people lose their commitment to eating healthy. Dr Joey's Skinnychews are those two little treats that taste sweet, but aren't packed with artificial ingredients that send your metabolism awry. According to the nutrition label, they have fibre (4 grams each) and are gluten free. Plus they're chewy, so you actually feel as though you are eating something with substance. They are "just enough" to take the edge off that feeling you need to eat a donut or chocolate bar. It's a healthier option for those people who are prone to emotional eating and find solace in unhealthy snacking choices, according to Shulman.

"Everyone starts off their day eating healthy, but for so many, it ends badly," says Shulman. "Skinnychews are for those cravings, instead of eating cookies or cereal. For midday and after dinner. They are to help you stay on track and satisfy your sweet tooth in a natural way."

By natural she means Skinnychews ingredients are chicory root, inulin fibre, sugar, brown rice syrup, cocoa powder, palm oil, chocolate liquor and soy lecithin. The nutrition label shows two chews (12 g) contain 1 g of fat, 10 mg sodium, 10 g carbohydrates, 5 g sugars, and 4 g of fibre. Compare to two Canadian Girl Guide cookie with 140 calories, 6g fat, 120 mg sodium, 20 carbohydrates, 11 g sugar and 1g fibre.

Shulman knows Skinnychews are not the equivalent of an apple when it comes to health, but they are much healthier choice than scarfing back two cookies in an emotional eating crisis, which is a common trigger for many women.

"Skinnychews are chocolate with benefits," says Dr. Shulman, smiling at her little joke.

Her "Doctor" title is legitimate, she holds a BA in psychology and she's a fully qualified Doctor of Chiropractic, a profession she practised for several years in Oakville, Ontario before she turning to her true passion - nutrition. (She's also a registered nutritionist.) She's not an idealist, she knows that sustained weight loss is more than overcoming a craving, but she knows that every little bit of support helps.

As we sit in her dining room, our conversation drifts from weight loss to family life. Shulman (her real name is Joanne, but was nicknamed Joey as an infant) confesses that she did a lightning clean up of her house before I arrived. With the help of her nanny, they put away the detritus that a busy family creates. Both Shulman and her husband, Randy Taylor, are entrepreneurs and with two young children, she admits she couldn't be a best-selling author, run three clinics and appear on Cityline TV without her nanny's help. We wander over to her kitchen; her fridge boasts, like every proud parent, drawings made by her children, and family photos are everywhere, along with a well-used, child-sized table and chairs in the sunny kitchen nook.

Shulman says she is grateful to her husband for his patience, which balances her "obsessive" nature. "Skinnychews literally became an obsession two years ago. I tried everything in them... green tea, CLA, we spent a lot of time, money and effort before we got them right," recounts Shulman. Her husband, she says, is a natural optimist, a trait that has rubbed off on her. When talking about family life, she reveals they are careful not to over-program their son and daughter's schedules, and most nights they have a family dinner together. "There are two times a day kids will tell you big things - at dinner and bedtime," says Shulman. She tries to be there for both times.

Like most working mothers, she has trials and tribulations trying to integrate the many aspects of her life. "I also need gobs and gobs of alone time, but as a mom and entrepreneur, I don't get that right now," she says. "I'm lucky I love what I do."

Then I asked her a question that often perplexes people, "What is it that you think you are doing?"

She smiles. "I help people lose weight with dignity."

She was sincere. She really wants to help people. That's why I like Dr. Joey Shulman. On my long drive home, I ate a handful of Skinnychews. They tasted pretty good and I didn't feel guilty.
