Log onto FitMissy.com and you're welcomed by an animated brunette in active wear, ready to whip you into shape. The cheerful avatar is Fit Missy, your trainer in a nine-week video program, which you can download instantly to your computer or tablet. But behind the cartoon is a real woman - Vesna Dodevska - who left her paying job behind to launch her entrepreneurial dream.
"When I was in the corporate world, I knew that it wasn't for me. They hand you a position and then you do what you need to do. Whereas when you're starting something on your own you can be more creative."
Ten years ago, being a personal trainer was just a job with flexible hours — exactly what Vesna needed while she completed her Bachelor of Commerce. But after she toiled for three years in the information technology and software sector, she realized fitness was her passion — underscored by a strong desire to build her own business.
"I always wanted to do something on my own. I would always read about people doing great things and I'd be inspired, but I never really did anything. Then I said, you know what? Just do it, Vesna, or you're going to be miserable and thinking back, why didn't I do something?"
Five months ago Vesna did do something: she quit. She kept her startup costs to a minimum by doing almost all of the work herself. She created the Fit Missy progressive exercise plan and nutrition guide. Then she shot her own workout videos on her iPhone and edited them on her laptop. To top it off, she designed her website on a WordPress template.
"I'm a team of one, but I did have help with the graphics," says Vesna. "I start work at 8 a.m. and I'm pretty much on it until I go to bed."
Even though she misses the social interaction of an office, not to mention the reliable paycheque, that wide grin on her avatar is no accident. "When I quit my job I was so happy."
