When I first developed and launched Skinnychews, my objective was to solve a problem. I wanted to create a delicious chocolaty chew that would ward off hunger and cravings at 3pm and after dinner (when stress and mindless eating hit). After working with thousands of men and women in the weight loss world for over a decade, I knew I had a winner. After intensive research and development, I was finally able to come to market with a delicious chocolaty chew that was all natural, low calorie, gluten free and was filled with appetite suppressing inulin fibre. Two chews per day did the trick and kept people from falling off the health wagon.

Little did I know then that the product I developed was about to turn into a Dragons’ Deal and a partnership with Arlene Dickinson. In truth, the turn of events that led me to Dragons’ Den was quite serendipitous. Like so many Canadians, I was a fan of the show and loved watching people pitch their passion and unique products. It was fascinating to see the entrepreneurial spirit of so many. Lo and behold, two summers ago while walking at the cottage, I turned to my husband and told him that I believed Skinnychews could really help Canadians and wanted to take it to the next level. At that moment, I bumped (literally bumped) into a tall man on the sidewalk. As I looked up – I was standing nose to nose with Jim Treliving (a fellow dragon on the show). With the hair on the back of my neck standing up… I took it as a sign and decided to apply. The rest as they say is history.
In my current day to day life, I am constantly asked two questions regarding Dragons’ Den, which are;
- What is it like running Dr. Joey’s Skinnychews?
- What is it like working with Arlene?
So, let’s address the first question. At my core – I am a health care practitioner who writes books, has clinics and is dedicated to helping as many as I can lose weight, feel great and ward off disease naturally. Entering into the world of natural products has been a new experience with a learning curve but has been a blessing. I feel so lucky to have the forum to bring natural health products into the market that will make a difference. Working one on one with people for so many years (and losing 75 pounds myself!) I have the inside track as to what is needed and what will help. Although some days can feel like a roller coaster (which is slightly my Type A fault) - I would not change the experience or opportunity for the world.
Now onto the second question that I am literally asked daily – what is Arlene like as a partner? When I would watch Arlene on TV, there was an honesty and connection that was felt (likely why she is Canada’s television sweetheart). In person, I can truly tell you she is that and more - honest, kind and eager to support her partners. She and her team are also the hardest working people I have met. The business that is done on Dragons’ Den is real as is their involvement. With my passion for natural health care and Arlene’s commitment to bringing great products to Canadians – I am very excited to see what the future holds.
