My name is Patricia Drewnowska and I’m the founder, co-owner and lead designer at Patricia’s Cake Creations. My journey to entrepreneurship came as a bit of an accident. I have a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Ryerson University and worked as a mortgage investment analyst at CIBC’s head office after graduation. It was a natural transition, since during university I worked part-time in mortgage securitization at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). I was also a math tutor for 13 years starting in high school.
The business grew while I worked full-time, tutored math and slept on occasion, but I was pursuing my passion.
While at CIBC, I decided to take cake-decorating classes to make my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary cake. I wasn’t planning on starting a business, but knew from my mom’s small gift basket company that if I registered a business I would be able to purchase items for it at wholesalers. This led me to figure out a business name, and in 2005, Patricia’s Cake Creations was born. During this time, sadly, my dad’s mom passed away.
My Babcia (Grandma) Kristina was a big part of my life. I had admired her for being an architect in Poland, designing churches, hospitals, and music halls. To fill the void of her loss, I started taking every cake decorating class I could. I brought my many cakes in to my office for my co-workers to eat. Soon they started ordering from me and word spread that my cakes were yummy and pretty. The business grew while I worked full-time, tutored math and slept (on occasion!). During this time, I left my then-husband and purchased a house on my own. I continued working since I didn’t want to give up the safety of a steady paycheque, especially during that time of rough economy.
Finally, in 2010, I stopped working at CIBC and quit tutoring to focus solely on my business. In May 2012 my mom and brother joined the business and we purchased a unit in a plaza in the Kingsway area of Etobicoke. We incorporated and became co-owners. After 11 months of renovations (which we thought would never finish!) we opened Patricia’s Cake Creations Patisserie and Café.
On May 28th, 2013 we held our grand opening with just over 250 industry partners and personal friends attending. My mom is now front-of-house, my brother is the pastry chef and I’m the lead cake designer (meeting clients for custom cakes). I also handle our social media, photo shoots for magazines, and TV appearances of me and my cakes, or just my cakes.
I am nicknamed “Chef Ramsey” as I strive for perfection in our product - inside and out, and I have made people re-do things if necessary. I have two young kids (almost 4-year-old son Adam and almost 17-month-old daughter Kristina with my second husband Phil) so I sometimes work strange hours. I have built strong relationships with fellow industry partners and am a preferred vendor at many businesses in Toronto. I have made cakes for CTV’s The Social (even a gender reveal cake for Melissa Grelo), Cheryl Hickey’s baby shower, and multiple cakes for ex-dragon Robert Herjavec. Celebrity or not it all goes back to quality every single time. My cakes are yummy as well as pretty!
I have learned to turn lemons into lemon butter cream on a few occasions! Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone but for me working for myself is perfection!
