Working with Friends and other Design Challenges

Best friends Allan Chan, Matt Davis and Anwar Mekhayech started their design firm in 1998. Over the next fifteen years, the firm has expanded and contracted, changed office spaces, changed its name and seen its principals star in The Designer Guys, a popular television series on HGTV. Through it all, there has been one constant: friendship.

Not that working through the ups-and-downs of a highly competitive business has been a piece of cake. “You work with guys for fifteen years, you’re going to get under each others skin,” Chan explains, sharing a laugh with his two partners.

It’s a moment that underscores the charm and goodwill that the trio exudes, not to mention design chops that have seen them land high-profile projects like Momofuku and Soho House in Toronto plus major European projects for Generator Hostels.

Combining work and friendship can be a challenge. But it’s also an opportunity – to collaborate, grow, evolve – and the entrepreneurs who run The Design Agency wouldn’t have it any other way.
