Now arguably the first screen on the Internet, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have become the great opportunity for developers to gain notoriety and profit. Mobile apps have ushered in a gold rush mentality as enterprising technology entrepreneurs try to cash in on this booming new medium. In truth, there are only a select few that achieve any noteworthy success. Digital marketplaces, such as the Windows Phone Store, are inundated with countless new entries – and, needless to say, it can be difficult for even top quality apps to stand out in such a cluttered marketplace.

So how does one become successful in the online mobile app market?

In a previous post we wrote about the importance of creating a solid foundation for your app idea to stand on. Developers also have to take the following into consideration when breathing life into their app idea:

Standing out in a digital marketplace that contains thousands, if not millions, of apps will be key to your app’s success.
  1. Keep it simple: Many apps are lost on prospective customers if multiple steps are required to complete what the app is meant to do. Simplicity is key to engaging customers over mobile. App usability should be direct and easily provide concise information when requested.

  2. Create uniqueness: While still possible, creating niche apps is becoming increasingly difficult as more and more apps are submitted for consumption. Another opportunity is besting the competition by creating a better offering. Listen to gripes put forward by customers on places like Twitter and Facebook to create an app more suited to their needs.

  3. Appearance is key: A clean interface that provides an eye-catching experience to potential customers is key to your app’s continued use. Esthetics should bond with experience provided by said app.
  4. Free is powerful: Understandably, offering your app for free means all your hard work and efforts are offered free along with it, right? Not so. Offering apps for free can entice new audiences to trial your app and possibly purchase add-ons or buy other apps you have created.

Taking these factors into consideration can be the catalyst that drives visibility to your app creation. Standing out in a digital marketplace that contains thousands, if not millions, of apps will be key to your app’s success.
