Theresa Laurico had a dream – to spark change among Canada’s rising young professionals and to help foster social enterprises guided by the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.
The brand SociaLIGHT is a spin off of the traditional socialite, with a new spelling and acronym. “LIGHT” is an acronym for L.eader I.mpacting G.lobal H.umanity T.oday.
Her vision manifested in 2011 as the first ever SociaLIGHT Conference, a networking and leadership event that brought together 1,000 entrepreneurs and a wide array of top speakers and contributors, among them Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson and Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com.
This year’s SociaLIGHT Conference will feature an equally impressive lineup, including Mike McDerment, CEO and Co-Founder of Freshbooks and best-selling author Natalie Sisson, well known as “The Suitcase Entrepreneur.”
“This is more than an event,” Laurico says. “It is a movement of conscious global leaders coming together for positive systemic impact. It is the space and conversation for what is possible for each delegate, humanity and the planet.”
Laurico and Change Heroes Founder, Taylor Conroy, have partnered up for the SociaLIGHT Change Heroes Challenge with a goal to raise 1 million dollars to build 100 schools and educate 100,000 children in developing countries through Craig Kielburger’s Free The Children charity.
“We are not just celebrating social entrepreneurship and innovation,” Laurico states. “We are bringing together the global community and igniting our generation to put their love into action for positive global impact.”
The lineup of inspirational speakers kicks off on Saturday, November 23rd at The Metro Convention Centre in downtown Toronto. The program on Sunday, held at the Toronto Board of Trade, is entitled “And Now What?” – billed as a “hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves” day, designed to empower entrepreneurs into action and take their business or idea to the next level.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Laurico has the west coast in her sites: the inaugural SociaLIGHT Vancouver, BC conference will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre on February 22 & 23, 2014. An online platform featuring original media content and an e-learning program for startups is in the works for later in 2014 – alongside the eventual goal of working with Oprah Winfrey and launching a SociaLIGHT Conference in New York City.
