I have a prototype, and have begun the patent process for a child's toy. It is a toy that will boost sales of existing toys. It is something that I would like to licence to a toy company say, Mattel fisher price ,ganz as they already have the avenues in place to manufacture,distribute and sell complimentary toys. As an independant, how do I go forward and get a meeting with these people?

Landing a meeting with large companies can be tough, without a doubt. As a smaller player, you’ll have to work extra hard to catch the attention of the big guys. Here’s our advice:

  1. Do your homework. Find out who they key players are at the companies you want to reach. You will want to reach the decision-makers in the organization, so pay attention to titles. While more junior employees may seem easier to approach, you will want to explain your proposition as clearly as possible and adding intermediaries makes that more difficult.  Decide what department in that company would be responsible for this decision. In other words, make sure you’re talking to the right people.

  2. Reach out via email. Even if you don’t have the email address of the person you want to reach you can always find the email address of someone at the company. Then apply the same email convention and you’re almost guaranteed success. Ideally the title of your email will concisely describe how your product "solves a problem."

  3. Establish credibility. Your email should let the receiver know that you have a track record and that your product is viable. 

  4. Follow up. If you don’t get a response, assume that the email was not received. You can follow up via a second email, phone or even social media if appropriate. You can only follow up once or twice without becoming a pest, so be selective about your timing and methodology. When you are following up, it’s a great idea to let the decision-maker know about any positive developments with your company or even send a link to any related news or industry articles.

  5. If at all possible, get in front of them. The best business connections happen in person – there’s no substitute. If you get that meeting – make it count!
