In today's world of IT, is it necessary, and worth the money, to seek a BBB accreditation? Can they really increase your ranking with Google?

Hi Vicki,

You seem a little skeptical of BBB’s ability to improve Google rankings, and we think you’re right to be.  A BBB accreditation or other trust seal can have a place in the course of a business transaction.  For some people, a trust seal will make them feel safe enough to proceed with the transaction.  It’s definitely conceivable that trust seals help with conversion, once a customer is already on your web site.  (We’d argue though, that for online businesses like yours, a potential customer is just as likely to do a quick online search for bad reviews as they are to take the word of a trust seal.)

Consumer confidence and conversion aside, there is little evidence that a BBB accreditation can do much to improve your Google rankings.    While it’s possible that backlinks from the main BBB site may help with your Google ranking, we think there are better ways for small business to spend money increasing web presence.  We’d recommend using the money for blogging, email marketing and social media.  We’d be willing to bet your returns will be higher.
